Achalasia Cardia Treatment – Agrawal Gastrocare Center Indore

Achalasia Cardia is a rare but troublesome condition that affects the oesophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach. It’s characterized by the oesophagal muscles’ inability to relax and allow food and liquids to pass into the stomach properly.

This can lead to symptoms like difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, and chest pain. In this blog, we’ll explore the treatment options for Achalasia Cardia, breaking them down into simple points.

Lifestyle Modifications:

  • Start with dietary changes: Switch to a softer diet that’s easier to swallow. Avoid foods that may trigger symptoms, like spicy or greasy items.
  • Eat slowly and in smaller portions: Taking your time with meals and eating smaller amounts can reduce the chances of food getting stuck in your oesophagus.

Medications:

  • Medications can help relax the oesophagal muscles, making it easier to swallow. Your doctor may prescribe medications like nitrates or calcium channel blockers.
  • In some cases, a botox injection can be used to relax the tight muscles in the oesophagus temporarily. It’s a quick and relatively simple procedure.

Dilation (Balloon Therapy):

  • This involves the insertion of a balloon into the oesophagus and then inflating it to stretch the narrow part. It’s a non-surgical option that can provide relief, but the effects may not be permanent.

Surgical Intervention:

If other treatments don’t work or the condition is severe, surgery may be necessary. There are different surgical options, including:

  • Heller Myotomy: This surgery involves cutting the muscles at the lower oesophagus and upper stomach to allow for easier passage of food.
  • Fundoplication: Sometimes, a fundoplication procedure may be performed along with Heller Myotomy. It helps prevent acid reflux, which can be a complication of Achalasia.

Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM):

  • A newer minimally invasive procedure, POEM, involves making small incisions in the oesophagus to cut the muscles causing the problem. It’s less invasive than traditional surgery and has shown promising results.

Stay informed about your condition and treatment options. Ask questions and communicate openly with your healthcare provider to ensure you’re getting the best care possible.
