What is Colon Cancer

The big intestine is where colon cancer typically first occurs. The digestive system completes with the colon. Colon cancer can strike anyone at any age, but it often strikes older persons. Small, benign (non-cancerous) cell clusters called polyps commonly grow on the inside of the colon as the first signs of the condition.

Some of these polyps may develop into colon cancer in the future. Small polyps may have few, if any, symptoms. As medical professionals advise routine screening exams to help prevent colon cancer by locating and eliminating polyps before they develop into cancer.

There are numerous therapies available to help control colon cancer, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and medication such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. The term colorectal cancer, which includes the terms colon cancer and rectal cancer (which starts in the rectum), is often used to refer to colon cancer.

Colon Cancer and Prevention

Doctors advise patients with a typical risk of colon cancer to think about getting screened at a specific age. However, those at higher risk, such as those with a family history of colon cancer, have to think about screening earlier.

There are several screening options, each having advantages and disadvantages of its own. Together, you can select which tests are right for you after discussing your options with your doctor.

Some lifestyle changes that you must religiously follow:

  • A variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains should be consumed.
  • Reduce your alcohol consumption. It would be ideal if you abstained from any alcohol consumption and smoking.
  • Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes most days.
  • If you are a healthy weight, make an effort to keep it off by incorporating regular exercise into your diet. Ask your doctor for advice on healthy weight loss methods if you need to shed some pounds.
