For capturing images of the GI tract in capsule endoscopy tiny wireless camera is used. The camera which is used in the procedure is placed in a small capsule that looks like a pill.
What is capsule endoscopy?
When a person swallows the capsule the camera present inside it starts its journey via the GI tract. On its way camera clicks many pictures. The images clicked can be transmitted to a recording device which can be worn on the waist.
Capsule endoscopy is meant to be used for viewing the small intestine particularly. Other conventional endoscopy techniques are not much capable to take pictures of the small intestine. If required capsule endoscopy can be used for viewing the GI tract’s different parts.
How is capsule endoscopy done?
1.Explanation of procedure
When you will meet your doctor he/she will explain to you the procedure so that you should what you should expect during and after the procedure.
2.Setting up of the device
During the procedure, you will be asked to wear a recording device on your waist. When the capsule having a camera will move through the GI tract it will store pictures on this device.
Sometimes electrode patches are too attached to the chest and abdomen for connecting the recording device. But all recording devices do not require it.
3.Intake of capsule
The size of the capsule is of the large multivitamin pill. With some water, you can swallow the capsule. camera will move through the GI tract it will store pictures on this device.
4.Regular activities
Once you have swallowed the capsule for the next 8 hours you can do your regular work.
General guidelines which are to be followed are:
- Before drinking liquid wait for at least 2 hours.
- Have a small snack after waiting for 4 hours.
- Avoid strenuous activities.
Post capsule endoscopy what happens?
The procedure is over generally after 8 hours or capsule gets passed out of the body in the bowel movement.
Whatever happens first contact your doctor after it so that electrodes can be removed and the recording device can be collected.
If you have not passed out the capsule then in a few hours or days you will notice it after a bowel movement. These capsules are disposable and can be safely flushed.
If you have not passed out the capsule in a few days you should contact your doctor. An X-ray might be conducted to check that if in GI tract capsule is still present.
