Poem for Achalasia Cardia – Agrawal Gastrocare Center

What is Achalasia Cardia?

Achalasia cardia is a rare disorder of the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. This makes it difficult for food and liquids to pass into the stomach.

Symptoms typically develop slowly and can include difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), chest pain, regurgitation of food or liquids, and weight loss. Some people may also experience coughing, especially at night.

Treatment aims to relieve symptoms and improve the passage of food into the stomach. Living with achalasia requires adjustments, such as eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding foods that are hard to swallow.

With appropriate treatment, most people can manage their symptoms and maintain a good quality of life.

Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a modern, minimally invasive procedure used to treat achalasia cardia, a condition where the esophagus has difficulty moving food into the stomach due to muscle problems.

  • Before the procedure, patients are typically asked to fast for several hours.
  • Endoscope Insertion: A flexible tube with a camera, called an endoscope, is gently inserted through the mouth and down the esophagus.
  • Creating a Tunnel: The doctor makes a small incision in the inner lining of the esophagus to create a tunnel.
  • Cutting the Muscle: Through this tunnel, the doctor carefully cuts the muscles of the LES. This cut, or myotomy, helps the LES relax, allowing food to pass more easily.
  • Closing the Tunnel: After the myotomy is complete, the tunnel in the esophagus is closed using small clips. These clips are usually temporary and will naturally fall off as the esophagus heals.

The POEM procedure usually takes about one to two hours, and patients can often go home the next day. Recovery is generally quick, with most people able to eat soft foods within a few days and return to normal activities shortly after.

POEM is highly effective for treating achalasia, offering significant symptom relief and improving the quality of life for many patients.
