Esophageal Variceal Banding
Esophageal variceal banding is a medical procedure used to treat enlarged veins in the esophagus. These veins can occur in people with liver disease, where the liver is unable to process blood properly, leading to a build-up of pressure in the veins.
Why is Esophageal Variceal Banding Needed?
Esophageal varices can be dangerous because they can rupture, leading to severe bleeding that can be life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to treat esophageal varices before they become a problem.
What Happens During Esophageal Variceal Banding?
Esophageal variceal banding is usually performed by a gastroenterologist, a doctor who specializes in digestive disorders. The procedure is done under sedation to make you more comfortable.
During the procedure, the doctor inserts an endoscope, which is a long, flexible tube with a camera on the end, into your mouth and down into your esophagus.
The doctor can see the enlarged veins through the camera and then places a small rubber band around the base of each varix. This will cut off the blood supply to the vein, and over time, the vein will shrink and disappear.
Are There Any Risks?
Esophageal variceal banding is a safe and effective treatment for enlarged veins in the esophagus. It is important to treat esophageal varices to prevent them from rupturing and causing severe bleeding.
